Adopt An Animal

Have you decided that the time is right to bring another friend into your life? One that will provide you with many years of love, companionship and joy?

Then you've come to the right place! The Butte Humane Society is host to some of the best friends you'll ever know!

If you've decided to adopt from a shelter, you may be aware of the serious problem of animal overpopulation in the United States. There are many, many more animals being born every day than there are homes to take them in. That's why California has a law requiring all animals that are adopted from shelters to be spayed or neutered before they go home with their new family. The only exception to this law is for animals that are too young to be altered. For these little ones, a deposit must be paid which is refunded to you at the time they are spayed or neutered.

At the Butte Humane Society, we believe that sharing your life with a dog, cat or other companion animal is a serious commitment. We want you to take the time to choose an animal that will fit your lifestyle. Come down to the shelter or to one of our mobile adoption sites and talk with one of our staff. They will help you choose the friend that is right for you!

What do you get when you adopt an animal from the Butte Humane Society instead of getting a so-called "free" animal in front of the grocery store or through classified ads? How about this:

 1. A free examination by a local veterinarian
(does not include shots or testing)

 (Value - $30)

 2. A microchip (What’s a microchip?)

 (Value - $25)

 3. Required vaccinations

 (Value - $15)

 4. A spay or neuter

 (Avg Value - $60)

 5. A collar for your dog or a carrier for your cat

 (Value - $10)

That "free" dog or cat isn't really free after all. Besides those five items, all dog adopters get a discount coupon good for one free dogwash at Scrubbs on the Skyway. And if you bring a copy of your adoption papers to the groomers at Chico Pet Works, you'll get a 25% discount on their services. When you adopt an animal from the Butte Humane Society, we do what we can to help your transition to having a new pet be an easy one.

The adoption process takes about 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on whether you already know what or who you want to adopt. This process can be streamlined a bit by downloading the appropriate Adoption Application (click on the type of animal you want to adopt above, then save and print) and filling it out before you come in.

We also have a "Caturday" special - cat adoptions are only $20 every Saturday! Regular adoption policies apply, as does the spay/neuter deposit for kittens.

Mobile Adoptions:

The Butte Humane Society is readily available for mobile adoptions at your business/school/group function. We are trying to find good homes for an abundance of animals, so every opportunity helps! Call Heather at 894-9066 ext. 3 for more information or to schedule a BHS mobile event. You can also join us at Petco on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. (near Costco) most Saturdays from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Come and see our dogs and cats outside a shelter setting.
If you can't adopt right now, then come down to the shelter and volunteer, or just to say hello!
