Butte Humane Society is an animal shelter with a mission- to adopt out as many pets to as many loving homes as possible. But for most shelters including BHS some pets are not always the easiest to adopt out. The Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable Pet Day, created by petfinders.com, held on August 12th every year, is a national awarness campaign that was created in order to shed light on how amazing "less adoptable" animals  are so that they too can find their forever home.

What does it mean to be a "Less Adoptable Pet"?

"Less Adoptable Pets" are animals that have the hardest time finding their forever home.  These animals include: black animals, seniors, animals with special needs, animals that have a breed stereotype and animals that can live in an only one animal household.  In a random survey created by petfinders.com, when asked which animals have the hardest time finding homes:

  • 54.2% of you have experienced "big black dog syndrome"
  • 29.9% said senior/older pets
  • 15.3% said pets with medical issues

What can I do to help curb the stigma attached to "Less Adoptable Pets"?

Adopt one!  Every day is a great day to adopt a "Less Adoptable Pet" at BHS but August 12-15 is especially terrific! BHS will be offering an adoption special on all "less adoptable" animals.  And if an adoption special isn't an incentive enough, here are few more reasons why adopting a "Less Adoptable Pet" is such a good idea:

  • Pets with physical disabilities are often unaffected by their challenges and can really tug at your heart-string and bring a much needed smile to your face!
  • You have the chance to prove society wrong and showcase your "Bad Reputation" breed as a quality pet!
  • Families often overlook dark-furred pets, but black goes with everything- so make a statement and accessorize!
  • Adopting a bigger dog reduces the chances of losing sight of them when outside, and accidently tripping over them as they lay!
  • Older pets tend to enjoy the more relaxed, mellower life style.
  • There are many sterotypical reasons a pet can seem "less adoptable," but that doesn't mean they can't be great pets!
