Pet Tips to Beat the Heat

With the warm weather upon us, it is time to start having fun outdoors with our furry friends. It's easy to forget that while taking pets on our fun-outings, they need special consideration. Here are some helpful tips to make sure you and your pet have a safe, fun-filled summer.
- Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle. Even a parked car with the windows cracked can cause brain damage or death to your pet. As the sun shifts during the day, even parking in the shade becomes dangerous.
- Playtime should occur during cool mornings or evenings. Having fun indoors is most beneficial when the weather is humid or your pet has just had a meal.
- You can protect your pet from skin damage by using sunscreen specially meant for animals. To keep your pet cool, proper grooming is the best way to go. Shaving hair down to one-inch (nothing lower, as this inhibits sun protection), and brushing their hair often, will prevent overheating.
- Become aware of the signs of overheating. These include, excessive panting and mild weakness, along with an elevated body temperature. For more on Heat Stroke in dogs click here
- As always, make sure your pet has cool, fresh water. If your pet spends time outdoors, make sure they have plenty of shade, and bring them inside during the heat of the day.
We hope you and your pet have a safe, fun, summer!
