Our NEW Partnership

Butte Humane Society is a fully independent non-profit organization with the shared goal of caring for our community's homeless animals and will continue to work in partnership with City of Chico Animal Services.  We know you must have a lot of questions about this NEW partnership, which is why we created this information page.  If you have more questions about please contact us.

What does the new partnership with the City of Chico Animal Services mean for Butte Humane Society?

Starting February 1st, Butte Humane Society will be able to focus 100% of our resources towards our mission and goals. First and foremost, we strive to find loving homes for all our adoptable animals. Placing animals in responsible homes is the first step in promoting a culture of Humane Stewardship within our community. Our Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic is one of Butte Humane Society's main stewardship programs. Through it, we provide services and education to the public concerning animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering.

How will Butte Humane Society be funded starting February 1st?

Butte Humane Society will be 100% funded through community donations and fundraising efforts in order to maintain the programs and services offered to the community. Although we do collect nominal fees, the success of our main stewardship programs to the community, Low Cost Spay & Neuter and Adoption Services, are made possible through your generous support.

Where do I go to adopt a companion animal?

Butte Humane Society will continue to serve the public by providing adoption services. Cats available for adoption can be found at our Cat Adoption Center located at 579 Country Drive in Chico. This is the same location as our Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic. If you're looking for a dog to adopt into your family, you will find our Dog Adoption Center at 2579 Fair St in Chico. We are currently sharing that facility with the City of Chico Animal Service.

How does Butte Humane Society determine what kind of home is best suited for an adoptable animal?

Butte Humane Society makes decisions on an animal's placement using the "Meet Your Match" program. Our Adoption Counselors use the animal's temperament assessment to match an animal's personality to your lifestyle. Our goal is to help you find a life long match with an animal that will fit seamlessly into your life.

Will Butte Humane Society place animals into Foster care?

Butte Humane Society will continue to administer a foster program to animals in its care. Our Foster program is instrumental in preparing animals for adoption. Many "unadoptable" animals are made adoptable through the efforts of our Foster Care Volunteers.

Will Butte Humane Society provide euthanasia services and what is the cost?

All euthanasia services for the public will be provided at Butte Humane Society's Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic, located at 587 Country Drive. Please call 530.343.7917 to schedule an appointment. Cost is determined by weight - visit buttehumane.org/clinic to see our services price list.

Where do I go if I lost my pet?

You can still find assistance finding your furry friends at the existing facility located at 2579 Fair St. Although, the process has not changed, you will be making the report to City of Chico Animal Services instead of Butte Humane Society.

Who will take animals surrendered by their owners?

Butte Humane Society will continue to be a driving force in the community supporting animal welfare. We will continue to care for and manage the medical and behavioral needs of all animals available for adoption. However, Butte Humane Society will no longer be performing intake of owner-surrendered animals and hold them for the legally required holding period. After the holding period, if the surrendered animal is deemed adoptable, it will be transferred to the Butte Humane Society to be made available for adoption.

Who will take stray animals brought in by Animal Control?

Butte Humane Society will no longer be providing services for intake of animals, lost animal reports, and holding of quarantine and protective custody animals. You will still be able to find all these services at the existing facility at 2579 Fair St.provided by City of Chico Animal Services.
