Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering at our shelter can be a very rewarding experience for you and your family. To see the joy in an animal's eyes when you take a dog for a walk, scratch a kitty's belly or give a senior bunny some love is an amazing and gratifying experience - for you AND them!

Volunteering is open to persons 16 years and older and ages 12-15 if accompanied by an adult over 18 years old.

Volunteering is easy!

  • RSVP to a volunteer orientation, held every other Saturday from 11am-12pm (please follow the link to the RSVP form)
  • Fill out a volunteer application after the volunteer orientation (will be provided for you)
  • Sign up and attend mandatory trainings in order to prepare you for the tasks and opportunities that interest you.
  • Schedule shifts with the volunteer coordinator.
  • Start helping our animals and our community!

Volunteers are required to do at least SIX hours per month (usually two shifts) for at least SIX months. We need this commitment in order to provide the best care consistently for our animals. If for some reason you cannot commit to six hours a month for six months, and feel that you have special circumstances and can provide meaningful help, there may be a volunteer opportunity right for you - please e-mail our volunteer coordinator Kendall Story or call 530-894-9066 ext 13.

Volunteer Opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Cat and Dog Care
  • Obedience For Adoptability - advanced dog training for current volunteers
  • Adoption Counseling
  • Animal Transport
  • Foster Care (separate application required)
  • Mobile Events
  • Office/Publication Assistance
  • Shelter Care/Maintenance
  • Special Events & Fundraising
  • Graphic Design, Marketing and PR

Please contact our volunteer coordinator Kendall Story via e-mail to find out more about how YOU can help!

If you are interested in fostering some of the great animals we have here, please e-mail foster@buttehumane.org. You can download the foster application here. In order to be considered for fostering, you must complete an application, have BHS approval and take the Foster Orientation.
